Washington Accuses Chinese AI Labs of Distilling US Frontier Models at Industrial Scale

The NSA, CISA and FBI formally charged six Chinese companies with running aggressive, targeted distillation campaigns against American frontier models.

In a joint cybersecurity advisory (AA26-251A) published September 8, the three agencies said DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, Alibaba, MiniMax, StepFun and Z.AI have been extracting capabilities from Claude, GPT, Gemini and Grok models since late 2024, pulling billions of tokens across millions of exchanges, often routed through third-party aggregators and gray-market API proxies that scrub user metadata. The advisory calls this activity the core of China's AI development strategy rather than a supplement, likely with the Chinese government's awareness, and says it breaches US terms of use. CISA acting director Nick Andersen urged AI companies to take immediate steps to safeguard their platforms, and none of the six named firms had publicly responded as of the latest reports.

Why it matters: the finding reframes a big part of Chinese AI progress, from DeepSeek's R1 to Qwen and Kimi, as built partly on US models' own outputs, and puts pressure on American labs to enforce access controls and licensing more strictly, which could change API pricing and terms for everyone.

Apple Kicks Off the Ternus Era With Its Biggest-Ever Product Slate

New CEO John Ternus takes the stage at today's "Surprise and Shine" event to start what Bloomberg calls the biggest run of device releases in Apple's history.

Apple's September 9 event opens with the latest iPhones and Apple Watches, including the long-rumored first foldable iPhone and the iPhone 18 Pro line, and it is only the beginning: Bloomberg reports a wave of fresh form factors and whole new product areas coming in 2026, 2027 and beyond, including a touch-screen MacBook.

It matters because Apple has spent roughly 15 years refining existing lines and services, so a genuine stream of new categories under Ternus signals a real shift in the company's hardware strategy.

Qualcomm and Amazon Ink Multi-Generation AI Silicon Deal

A warrant worth about $4 billion and up to $60 billion in product commitments tie the chipmaker's next generations of inference silicon to Amazon's data centers.

Qualcomm will supply multiple generations of AI inference chips plus optical networking hardware, including SerDes and DSP technology such as its CO400 optical DSP, which transmits data up to 12 miles for linking data centers. Amazon received a warrant to buy up to 25 million Qualcomm shares, worth about $4 billion, vesting in tranches through 2036, with the share issuance contingent on Amazon purchasing up to $60 billion of Qualcomm products. Qualcomm also plans to expand its use of AWS, running electronic design automation workloads on Amazon Bedrock, and its stock jumped roughly 10% to about $180 on the news.

The deal follows a similar multi-generational CPU agreement with Meta announced three months ago (Dragonfly C1000 series, over 250 cores at more than 5 GHz), underscoring how hyperscalers are pairing custom silicon with established chipmakers to meet soaring AI inference demand.

Nvidia to Buy Hugging Face for About $13 Billion

The GPU giant has signed a definitive agreement to fold the leading open-model hub into its own portfolio.

Nvidia announced a definitive agreement to acquire Hugging Face for roughly $12.9 to $13 billion, consolidating model hosting and developer tooling under a chipmaker. Analysts note the move will force buyers to re-evaluate supply-chain, licensing and portability assumptions for the models and tools hosted on the platform.

The deal lands in a week of notable consolidation, alongside Accenture's launch of a Gemini Enterprise business group with a 1,000-person forward-deployed engineer workforce for agentic use cases.

Meta Approved Hundreds of AI-Generated CSAM Ads, Investigation Finds

A review of the ads Meta paid to run between November 2025 and August 2026 found hundreds containing AI-generated child sexual abuse material.

The Tech Transparency Project's investigation found that Meta reviewed, approved and monetized hundreds of paid ads containing AI-generated child sexual abuse material (CSAM) across Facebook, Instagram, Threads and Messenger, with many of the ads linked to deepfake "nudify" applications.

The finding raises pointed questions about how AI content moderation handles synthetic images of children in a monetized advertising pipeline, and it arrives as regulators and advertisers scrutinize AI-generated content more closely.

ServiceNow buys Israeli agentic AI startup Sweep in hundreds-of-millions deal

The ITSM giant is sharpening its CRM attack on arch-rival Salesforce with an agentic layer that works across both ecosystems.

ServiceNow completed its acquisition of Israeli startup Sweep, an agentic layer for enterprise systems, in a deal estimated at hundreds of millions of dollars; a company spokesperson confirmed the deal closed on September 1, and the value remains undisclosed. Sweep, founded in 2021 by Ido Gaver and Eran Kirshenboim with $46 million in disclosed funding, builds what it calls an agentic workspace for go-to-market operations that spans ServiceNow, Salesforce, HubSpot, Snowflake, and Data 360. Its software monitors metadata across those systems, flags misalignments and bottlenecks, generates documentation, and now recommends or implements changes, so AI can act on information inside enterprise software rather than merely analyze it. Customers include Brex, LG Electronics, Mass General Brigham, NBC Sports, and Wix.

The move targets the CRM market that Salesforce dominates. In a written statement, ServiceNow said Sweep strengthens its AI-native development capabilities and advances agentic deployment for CRM, with the direct customer impact being faster time-to-value as agentic systems scale. President of Global Customer Operations Paul Fipps told CRN that CRM sales doubled year over year and CRM appeared in 16 of the company's top 20 deals last quarter. The purchase continues ServiceNow's Israeli acquisition spree that includes Armis ($7.75 billion), ai.work (July), Pyramid Analytics, and Traceloop, bringing its Israel-linked deals to at least seven and over $8 billion in total.

ServiceNow stock rallies 28% in a month as the AI software re-rating gathers pace

The jump came without any new company report, driven by a sector-wide shift in sentiment around enterprise AI.

ServiceNow shares rose about 28% in a month to $146 even though the company has released no new earnings report. The rally is sentiment-led: Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff publicly dismissed worries that AI would erode seat-based software revenue in late August, and Salesforce's strong Q2 (Agentforce ARR of $1.5 billion, up 240% year over year, with FY27 guidance raised to $46.1 to $46.4 billion) triggered a re-rating across the cohort. In the same window Salesforce gained 43% and Palantir 46%, while the iShares Expanded Tech-Software ETF rose about 10%, suggesting capital is rotating into specific AI winners rather than the whole software basket.

ServiceNow still trails those peers and remains down 11% year to date, so analysts frame the move as a rebound from fear rather than a fresh growth surprise. The underlying numbers stay strong: Q2 FY26 revenue of $3.99 billion, up 24% year over year, AI annual contract value that crossed $1 billion, agentic deployments up ninefold in nine months, and RPO of $13.2 billion, up 21%. Options positioning also tilts bullish, with a put/call ratio of 0.51, and the next test is Q3 guidance for subscription revenue of $3.975 to $3.98 billion.

Google Cloud and Accenture form a joint AI deployment unit, validating ServiceNow's forward-deployed bet

The partnership is the latest entry in the forward-deployed engineer race that ServiceNow joined in May with its own FDE initiative.

Google Cloud and Accenture created the Accenture Gemini Enterprise Business Group, a joint unit that will embed forward-deployed engineers (FDEs) directly in enterprises to build custom AI applications on the Gemini Enterprise platform, with Google training up to 1,000 Accenture FDEs. First reported by The Wall Street Journal, the deal is part of an industry-wide bet that implementing AI can become its own large business: OpenAI launched The Deployment Co., Anthropic partnered with Blackstone and launched Ode, Microsoft committed $2.5 billion to its own AI deployment company, and Amazon stood up a $1 billion FDE organization.

For ServiceNow, the move validates the model it adopted with an FDE initiative alongside Accenture in May, the same partner behind Google's new unit. Google also named ServiceNow among its key strategic partners, citing a $1.2 billion cloud contract, though it trails in enterprise AI spend: Ramp's August 2026 data put Anthropic at 43.5% of U.S. enterprise AI spending, OpenAI at 39.7%, and Google at roughly 6%.
