Nvidia acquires Hugging Face for $12.9 billion

The chip giant is buying its way up the AI stack, betting an open-source platform can cushion a possible slowdown in chip demand.

After weeks of swirling rumors, Nvidia confirmed on Thursday that it has agreed to acquire Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, its second-biggest deal ever after the roughly $20 billion purchase of Groq assets last December. Hugging Face, founded in 2016, hosts 3 million models, 1 million applications, and more than 18 million developers. CEO Jensen Huang pledged the site will "remain an open platform for the entire AI ecosystem," with Nvidia compute not required to build or deploy on it, and said the company has already published more than 500 models and 250 open datasets there.

Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue told CNBC that his team approached Huang over the summer, when open-source AI felt like it was at "a turning point" and needed more compute and scale. Under the deal, investors get about $11.9 billion and employees are offered up to $1 billion in equity retention. Analysts read the move as Nvidia hedging against customers like Meta, OpenAI, and Microsoft building their own chips, while gaining direct visibility into which models and architectures are trending.

OpenAI launches Astra, its most powerful and most controversial model yet

A big capability leap in computer and browser use, but OpenAI concedes the model's reasoning has become harder to audit.

OpenAI released Astra on Thursday, calling it its most powerful model to date and a "new frontier on computer and browser use." It is first available to customers in Daybreak, OpenAI's cybersecurity program, with paid plans (Pro, Plus, Enterprise, Business) and the API to follow over the coming week. President Greg Brockman described it as the company's "most aligned model yet," and when pressed on whether Astra marks the arrival of AGI, he said the old contractual trigger with Microsoft no longer exists and added, "For me personally, I do think we're there."

The controversy is the model's new reasoning technique, known as opaque recurrence or recurrent depth, which obscures the chain-of-thought signal that safety researchers rely on to monitor how and why a model decides things. Chief scientist Jakub Pachocki acknowledged that "as model capabilities are increasing, monitorability is getting more challenging," noting more capable models can complete hard tasks with fewer or no language tokens. OpenAI also leaned on the model's cyber capabilities, saying it can help defenders identify and develop zero-day exploits.

John Ternus officially takes the Apple CEO seat

After 15 years, Tim Cook hands the helm to the hardware chief who led Apple's switch to in-house silicon.

Tim Cook stepped down as Apple CEO after a 15-year run, with John Ternus, the company's senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, officially assuming the role on September 1. Cook remains at Apple as executive chairman, and he praised Ternus in a statement: "Few people understand what it takes to build products that change the world the way John does."

Ternus, 51, has spent 25 years at Apple, arriving on the product design team in 2001 and later leading the transition from Intel chips to Apple silicon, while overseeing the AirPods, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro. He steps in at a pivotal moment: the iPhone launch event is set for September 9, and Apple is rolling out a new Siri experience powered by Google's Gemini, a sign of how the company is choosing to close the gap in the AI race.

Mistral raises €3 billion led by Samsung at a €21 billion valuation

Europe's sovereign AI champion more than doubled its valuation in a year, in the largest equity round ever by a European tech company.

Mistral said Tuesday that it has raised 3 billion euros ($3.5 billion) in a Series D round led by Samsung Electronics, with participation from the EU-backed Scaleup Europe Fund managed by EQT and existing investor PSG Equity. The round values the Paris-based company at more than 21 billion euros, up from 11.7 billion euros a year ago when ASML led its previous round.

CEO Arthur Mensch said the money will fund more infrastructure, including Mistral's own data centers, and that the compute the company owns is expected to grow around 100% over the next five years. He also expects annual recurring revenue to beat the $1 billion pace the company was trending to earlier this year. Mistral is positioning itself as a non-U.S., non-Chinese alternative for enterprises, with a focus on open-weight models and custom, business-specific AI tools.
