Samsung announces largest-ever shareholder return package for 2026

The Korean tech giant pledged between $65.1 billion and $79.5 billion in returns, surpassing all previous commitments by a domestic company.

Samsung Electronics announced Friday that it expects shareholder returns to total between 90 trillion won and 110 trillion won ($65.1 billion to $79.52 billion) in 2026, marking the largest such commitment by a Korean company. The announcement comes as Samsung seeks to catch up with rival SK Hynix in high-bandwidth memory chips used in AI systems, with Samsung's stock up around 135% year-to-date. Details of the payout will be finalized at a board meeting in late October, with approximately 30 trillion won in cash dividends expected in the third quarter.

Claude achieves 14 of 15 protein binder targets in autonomous design test

Anthropic's models outperformed industry benchmarks with 22-35% hit rates in a fully autonomous protein engineering workflow.

Anthropic reported that Claude successfully designed working protein binders for 14 of 15 targets in a recent experiment, with hit rates of 22-35% significantly outperforming the industry standard of 10-15%. The models (Mythos Preview and Opus 4.8) executed the entire workflow autonomously, including selecting binding sites, orchestrating design models, running optimization cycles, and screening candidates. In analytical chemistry, Claude Opus 5 interpreted raw NMR and LC-MS data in 19-23 minutes, matching lab results and producing reports four days faster than traditional workflows.

Xiaomi's Tieda robot hits 98% accuracy in real factory trial

The humanoid robot achieved near-human performance on a repetitive manufacturing task after four months of on-site testing.

Xiaomi's humanoid robot Tieda achieved a 98% success rate on a self-tapping nut installation task after a four-month trial at one of Xiaomi's own auto plants, just one percentage point below the average human worker. Unveiled at the 2026 World Robot Conference in Beijing (August 19-23), Tieda stands 1.7 meters tall, weighs 66 kg, and uses 66 degrees of freedom with an LLM-based control system for task reasoning. Unlike many humanoid robots that rely on remote operators during demos, Tieda runs on a large language model that lets it interpret tasks and choose its own actions, though Xiaomi has no plans to sell it as a standalone product.
