Stripe finalizes $7 billion acquisition of AI model gateway OpenRouter

The payments giant pays over five times OpenRouter's May 2026 valuation to absorb the startup serving 8 million developers across 400+ AI models.

Stripe has finalized an agreement to acquire OpenRouter for more than $7 billion, marking one of the largest AI-related deals of 2026. The purchase price is roughly five times OpenRouter's reported $1.3 billion Series B valuation from just months earlier, underscoring the intense demand from established companies to gain footing in the AI infrastructure market.

OpenRouter, founded in 2023 by Alex Atallah (who previously co-founded OpenSea), functions as an AI model routing platform that lets developers compare and switch between models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, and dozens of Chinese providers. The New York-based company has attracted capital from Alphabet's Capital G, Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia, and Menlo Ventures, raising over $150 million in total. The acquisition gives Stripe a direct presence in the rapidly expanding model-aggregation and agent-infrastructure segment.

Alibaba releases Qwen3.8-27B, an open-weight model built for local deployment

The dense 27B-parameter model ships with Apache 2.0 licensing, native vision, and benchmarks that rival much larger proprietary systems.

Alibaba released Qwen3.8-27B on Hugging Face on Aug. 14, 2026, as the practical, locally runnable half of the Qwen 3.8 generation. Unlike the flagship Qwen3.8-Max (a 2.4 trillion-parameter sparse Mixture of Experts model released Aug. 3 under a restrictive custom license), the 27B variant is a dense model with all parameters active, available under the permissive Apache 2.0 license. It natively understands images and video, features a 262K-token context window (extendable to ~1M via YaRN), and fits on consumer GPUs with 24–32GB of VRAM.

The model scored 61.7% on SWE-Bench Pro, 90.3% on LiveCodeBench, and 89.2% on GPQA Diamond — performance that places it competitive with much larger proprietary models. Community reaction has been strongly positive; the model is displacing competitors like Meta's Muse Glimmer 30B in the ~30B parameter tier and is expected to see rapid GGUF and Ollama quantizations in the coming days.

Google makes Gemini 3.7 Flash generally available for coding and agents

The latest workhorse model ships with steep introductory pricing through year-end and substantial gains on software engineering benchmarks.

Google released Gemini 3.7 Flash (gemini-3.7-flash) as a generally available model on Aug. 13, 2026, positioning it as a coding and agentic workhorse for software engineering and web development workloads. The model comes with introductory pricing available through Dec. 31, 2026, following a launch strategy that mirrors previous Flash releases aimed at making frontier capabilities affordable for high-volume tasks.

Gemini 3.7 Flash builds on the trajectory set by the Gemini 3.6 Flash release (July 21) and 3.5 Flash (May 19), with Google highlighting substantial improvements in agentic planning, sustained coding performance, and token efficiency. The release also coincides with Gemini hitting 1 billion monthly users — matching ChatGPT's milestone.

Anthropic reports $11.5 billion in Q2 revenue, posts first quarterly profit

The AI safety-focused lab hits a revenue milestone while also rolling out invisible watermarks to Claude outputs for EU compliance.

Anthropic reported Q2 2026 revenue of $11.5 billion and reached profitability for the first time, a significant inflection point for the company backed by Amazon, Google, and OpenAI founder Sam Altman. The revenue figure reflects strong enterprise demand for Claude across coding agents, research workflows, and agentic software systems.

Around the same period, Anthropic implemented invisible text watermarking on Claude outputs using a SynthID-Text approach (originally published by Google DeepMind) to comply with the EU AI Act and the EU Code of Practice on AI-Generated Content Transparency, which Anthropic signed in July 2026. The watermarks carry no identifying information, are undetectable to readers, and add no extra cost or latency to model outputs.
