OpenAI unveils Astra model with 10 groundbreaking math proofs

The company's next major model family solved long-standing problems in geometry, group theory, and combinatorics, with proofs formalized in Lean for machine-checkable verification.

OpenAI has officially announced its next major model family, "Astra," by releasing a report detailing ten previously unsolved mathematical proofs across high-dimensional geometry, coding theory, group theory, quantum complexity, lattice cryptography, and extremal combinatorics. One major breakthrough established the existence of non-sofic groups, resolving a question that had remained open for decades. The model generated the arguments, humans helped turn them into research papers, and the proofs were formalized in Lean, creating machine-checkable certificates of correctness.

The achievement cost approximately $2,000 in API tokens at OpenAI's Sol rates. Thomas Bloom from the University of Manchester called the results "big news," noting that while AI didn't replace mathematicians, it drew on more than a century of human mathematical theory. Astra is the first model to undergo the planned U.S. government safety review process under the new AI framework and may ship as GPT-6 or a variant like GPT 5.7.

Meta reports $60.8B Q2 revenue, raises 2026 AI capex floor to $130B

Strong ad growth drove revenue up 28% year-over-year, but heavy AI infrastructure investment squeezed free cash flow to just $784M.

Meta Platforms posted second-quarter 2026 revenue of $60.8 billion, a 28% increase year-over-year, driven by a 14% rise in ad impressions and a 12% increase in average price per ad. However, total costs rose 55% to $42 billion, including $2.4 billion in legal charges and $1.18 billion in severance expenses from the May 2026 headcount reduction. Free cash flow collapsed to $784 million from $8.55 billion the prior year, as capital expenditures reached $31.08 billion.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that AI is accelerating Meta's core business and opening new enterprise opportunities. The company raised its full-year 2026 capital expenditure forecast floor to $130 billion, up from $125 billion, reflecting continued heavy investment in AI infrastructure. Family Daily Active People reached 3.6 billion, up 3% year-over-year.

GPT-5.6 helps mathematicians disprove 152-year-old Maxwell conjecture

A configuration of five point charges producing 24 critical points overturned James Clerk Maxwell's 1873 upper bound of (n-1)².

The paper "The Maxwell Conjecture is False," posted to arXiv on July 29 by Philip Arathoon, Gavin Ball, and Matthew D., presents a counterexample showing that five charges can produce 24 non-degenerate critical points, exceeding the conjectured maximum of 16. GPT-5.6 Sol suggested the key configuration that led to this proof, which overturns a conjecture that had remained unbroken for roughly 150 years.

This breakthrough opens new directions in the study of electrostatic equilibrium points. Greg Brockman of OpenAI noted on X that it was "wild that this level of intelligence can be accessed by and is available to empower everyone," highlighting the significance of AI-assisted mathematical discovery.

MediaTek approves $5B financing for AI data-center chip expansion

Taiwan's largest chip designer targets 15-20% share of the $80B custom AI chip market by 2027.

MediaTek's board approved a discretionary financing budget of $5 billion to support long-term growth in AI chips for data centers, marking a strategic push to reduce reliance on smartphones. The company raised its 2027 addressable market estimate for custom AI chips to $80 billion and increased its target market share to 15-20% from 10-15%.

The first custom AI chip is entering production in the fourth quarter, with a second expected for volume production in 2028. MediaTek expects its data-center AI chip business to generate more than $2 billion in revenue in 2026. This comes as smartphone-chip revenue fell 20% in Q2 amid rising component costs and declining global smartphone shipments.
